The 10-point checklist
- Showreel: does it include work in your category, format and budget range?
- People: who will produce and direct, and what have they personally made?
- Clients: have they worked with brands or platforms like yours?
- Budget: do they give a line-item budget with options, or a single number?
- Creative input: can they improve the script, or only execute it?
- Post-production: are edit, sound, colour and VFX in-house or outsourced?
- Timeline: is the schedule realistic, with time for approvals?
- Revisions: how many rounds of edits are included?
- Ownership and usage: who owns the footage and for how long can you use it?
- Communication: will you have one accountable producer throughout?
Questions to ask before you sign
- Who exactly will be on my project from start to finish?
- What could make this budget go up, and how will you tell me?
- What do you need from us, and by when, to keep the schedule?
- Which deliverables, durations and formats are included?
- How do you handle permissions, insurance and contingencies?
Red flags
- A quote far below others with no explanation of what is excluded.
- No clarity on who will direct or produce.
- Reluctance to share a detailed budget.
- Vague answers on revisions, ownership or delivery formats.
